'Ensure that we don’t end up in our own bubble'

“Build that thing in Sardinia!” In February, we organised eight meetings for residents of the Belgian and Dutch search area for the Einstein Telescope. There was a lot of enthusiasm, but it also appeared that not everyone was overjoyed at the idea. Dewi Andoetoe, communications consultant for the Einstein Telescope, looks back in this column.

Aachen laser builders hunt for invisible gravity waves

Laser specialists Patrick Baer and Melina Reiter (ILT, Aachen) are working on a possible solution for the Einstein Telescope's lasers. The gravitational waves the telescope will look for are themselves invisible, but to detect them you still need light.

‘This will make our region known!’

There’s a lot of interest in the geological survey we’re currently conducting in the search area for the Einstein Telescope. This involves extracting drill cores from the soil to an average depth of 275 metres. Years 5 and 6 of Maria-Hilf primary school in Gemmenich came to see what kind of rocks the geologists are finding in their neighbourhood.

Did you know...?

All the colliding black holes in the universe

Once operational, the Einstein Telescope will be sensitive enough to hear black holes colliding out to the farthest reaches of the visible universe. It’s estimated that we’ll hear the gravitational waves of such a collision every 20 minutes. A big step forwards compared to the three detections every fortnight of current detectors!

‘Convincing European countries of our candidacy’

Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands have been organising meetings for representatives of other European partner countries. Laurent Ghys of Belspo explains how these talks boost the chances of or our border region.

Einstein Telescope EMR Forum at a historic site

On 10 April 2024, the Einstein Telescope EMR Forum took place at the renowned Solvay Library in Brussels. This historic site was the place where Albert Einstein himself, along with other great Nobel Prize-winning scientists such as Niels Bohr, Marie Curie, and Max Planck achieved historic breakthroughs in physics during the famous Solvay Conferences.
